The 2007 year ends with some new changes to our website.  Sarah (see Members) has wrestled the
updating duties away from Lily and will be doing her best to update the site with details on our training, our
upcoming races, and our results.  Check this page (News & Views) frequently to find out what's going on.

I'm working on getting our 2007 Outdoor Race Results up - bear with me as this could take some time -
hopefully I'll get it done before we start our 2008 outdoor races!! - Sarah
January 10, 2008
We're just a few days away from our first race of the season.  A 1,500m indoors at York University on Sunday
January 13.  We're all ready - we've been training hard since late October/early November.  Check back on
Sunday or Monday night for the race results and see how we did.  I should add a disclaimer now:
*our club
holiday party is on Saturday night, therefore some of us *may* be affected/hindered in the race as a result of
all of the dancing we do on Saturday night!!

Congratulations to Kitty Cashman, winner of the Etobicoke Track Club's Bruce Savage Female Masters
Athlete of the Year Award, which was handed out at the Club Party on Saturday night.  Kitty's year started out
with a 7:28 finish at the Hamilton Indoor Games (1,500m), a 15:55 finish at the Ontario Masters Indoor
Championships (3K), and a 56:06 at the Art Keay Memorial Racewalk (10K).  At the World Masters
Championships in Italy in September, Kitty won a silver medal in the 5K at 27:10 and a Bronze medal in the
10K at 56:08.  She was also part of the 10K racewalk Bronze Medal Team.  To top it all off, just a week or so
after Italy, and with little to no distance training, Kitty went out and walked a 20K in Welland in 2:02!
Congratulations, Kitty on a great year!
January 21, 2008
Our second race of the year is now in the books.  If you check out the results, you'll see a lot of improvement
for everyone between this week and last.  Check out the split-second difference between John and
Sayward's times!  That certainly was a photo finish!  Way to go everyone!  See you at the next race!
January 28, 2008
Hm, we may have to change our club name to Ontario Racewalkers and Runners!  Two of our walkers
competed in running events at the Ontario Masters Mini Meet on Sunday.  Hans Dinger did great in two tough
distances - the mile and the 3,000m.  He was 5:57.6 in the mile and improved on his 3,000m time from two
was able to run two laps to warm up) she crouched into the blocks and blasted a 200m in 34.7s.  Now that's
great you guys, but c'mon we all know that walking's where its at!
February 11, 2008
We are five races into the indoor season now.  There are three races left for some walkers, only two left for
others.  I hope you're following our progress in the
Results section.  One of our members has been absent
for all of the races so far, but for good reason.  Check out the write up on Rachel Lavallée in our
Members
section.  You'll find out what she's been up to, and what events she's training for.
February 17, 2008
yeserday, and to Patrick King who had an amazing finish time.  25 laps of the
track!  I think that's deserving of a huge round of applause!  Way to go you
guys!  Congratulations also go out to Kitty Cashman and to Sayward Spooner
- 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the Seniors Championship.  Here's a picture
of 1st place winner Kathryn Jackman, 2nd place winner Kitty Cashman, and
the 3rd place visitor - Marie Helene Ratel.  Sayward wasn't there to receive her
medal or get in the picture.  Say, we'll get you in a picture one of these days!
Well, our indoor season ended on the weekend of February 23/24, 2008.  Several of us did the Hamilton
Indoor Games and Ontario Masters Indoor Championship that weekend.  I think we can all say that we had
a pretty good indoor season.
After a two week break we are ready to get back at it and start training for the outdoor season.  We start
training on Tuesday March 11!  Check out our
Upcoming Events section to see what outdoor races we'll be
doing.
March 28, 2008
Just a short update....we're back into our training right now, with not much to report on race-wise.  Its been
a challenging spring so far, that's for sure.  We have had to go indoors to train a couple of times.
Hopefully the warmer weather is on the way!  We have all had enough of the snow!
On Sunday March 30, Coach Stafford Whalen is hosting a World Cup Time Trial at our St. George's
training course.  There are approximately 5 athletes doing distances of 10 and 20K.  Ontario Racewalker
Rachel Lavallée (see
Members) will be doing 20K.  As she said in her last update, "I have technically
already qualified for the Canadian team but I have to prove fitness to ensure my spot on the team".  Good
luck Rachel!  We'll be out there cheering you on!
April 4, 2008
The weather gods did not realize that we needed slightly warmer, and definitely less windier conditions for
Sunday's World Cup Time Trial.  It was challenging for the athletes, and speaking from first-hand
experience, I can say that the officials found it pretty cold as well!  Rachel Lavallée will head to
Hauppauge, NY this weekend to do a 10K race.  The weather is looking good for this weekend so that
shouldn't be an issue.  Go get 'em Rachel!
April 10, 2008
Congratulations to Rachel Lavallée who is heading to the World Cup in Russia (May 10&11)!  Rachel
walked a 10K in New York on the weekend in 48:34, which proved her fitness to Athletics Canada and
earned her a trip to Russia.  Coach Stafford will also be going as the head coach.  Good luck Rachel!
April 13, 2008
The Ontario Masters Track & Field Association (OMTFA) recently revealed their new website.  Check out
www.ontariomasters.ca (you can also get to it through our "links" section here on our site) for all Ontario
Masters information.  The OMTFA offers several indoor and outdoor races for racewalkers throughout the
year, so check out the website to find out how to join the association and start competing yourself.  If it
wasn't for the OMTFA our racing season(s) would be much shorter, so come join us for a race or two!
April 18, 2008
Well, some of us (Lily, Kitty, Sayward, Sarah and Coach Stafford) are off to Ottawa tomorrow to participate
in the One Hour walk on Sunday.  There are 19 people signed up to do it so they are running it (walking
it!) in two sections.  It should be interesting to see how it pans out.  Basically, you walk as much of a
distance as you can within that 1 hour.  I'll let you know the results on Sunday or Monday.
April 26, 2008
I am still waiting to get the full results of the One Hour last weekend in Ottawa, so I haven't updated the
results section yet.  Lily, Kitty and Sayward all had good results.  I (Sarah) had a DNF.  Everyone who
participated had a great time.  The
Bytown Walkers are a great group and were so welcoming to all of
us.  Thanks guys!
May 4, 2008
weekend (May 11) in Russia.  Rachel's race is at 1:00pm local time on Sunday, so that's 5:00am our
IAAF World Racewalking Cuptime.  We should have some preliminary race results by mid-morning.
Coach Stafford is flying out for A huge GOOD LUCK to Rachel Lavallée who is competing in the the
competition on Tuesday.  We'll miss him at our workouts this week, but are looking forward to hearing
the stories when he returns.
There is also a somewhat smaller local race this weekend for those of us who somehow didn't qualify
for the World Cup!  Masters athletes can compete in a 5,000m outdoors on the track at the
Ontario
Masters East Regional Championships in Brockville Ontario.
May 18, 2008
Well, there's lots to update on today:
1) Ottawa One Hour - The
results from the One-Hour Walk in Ottawa are now posted.
2) IAAF World Race Walking Cup - I've got the
results form the Women's 20K walk posted.   Rachel
Lavallée competed in this.
3) Ontario Masters East Regional Champs -
Results from this race in Brockville are now posted.
4) Lots of new
pictures from 2008 are now posted.
5)
Art Keay Memorial Racewalk - Don't forget about this upcoming race scheduled for June 1, 2008.  An
updated entry form is posted
here.  * Check out the new category for Power Walkers *.
May 25, 2008
There is one week to go until the Art Keay Memorial Racewalk.
At 11:00 a.m. on Sunday June 1, 2008, several racewalkers (and this year
Power Walkers as well) will do a 5K, 10K or 20K on Hanlon's Point on the
Toronto Islands.
Don't forget to check and double check the
schedule for the Toronto Island
ferry.  The Summer Ferry Schedule begins on May 30th.  So for Sunday
June 1, you'll want to be on either the 8:00, 8:45 or 9:30 a.m. ferry to
ensure you get over to the island (and walk the 10-15 mins to the start
line) in enough time.  Don't forget you also have to register and get your
bib well before 11am.
The cost for the ferry is still a reasonable $6.00 return trip, so don't forget
your twoonies!  Catch up with your fellow racewalkers on the ferry trip over
and discuss your race strategy!
June 2, 2008
A huge, huge thank you to Stafford and Lily for putting on a great Art Keay race yesterday.  Your
tireless effort before, during and after the race was greatly appreciated by all of us who competed.
A great big thank you also goes out to all of the judges and the volunteers - the lap counters/timers,
the water table crew, the marshals on the course and all of the spectators.  There were 51 of us in
the race yesterday - a new record!  We wouldn't be able to grow if it weren't for all of the support.
And thanks to those of you who travelled long distances just to come to the race!  Hopefully we'll see
you on a course again sometime soon!
June 3, 2008
Stafford sent out an updated file with the Art Keay race results today.  This one has some minor
items cleaned up on it.  Tomorrow I should have some time to put the results under our Art Keay
section here on the website.
June 16, 2008
We are about to embark on three weekends in a row of races.
First one up is the OTFA Seniors in Ottawa this Sunday.  We're looking forward to seeing our friends
from the Bytown Walkers again.  There is also a rumour that Rachel is entered in this one, so it will
be nice to be on the track with her again too.
Then on Sunday June 29 we've got the Ontario Masters Championships.  This year its being held in
Toronto at York University.
Lastly, the big one is July 5 in Windsor.  Its the Canadian Seniors.  This is a really neat event.  We
get to be a part of the Canadian Track & Field Championships!  How many people can say that they
get to compete in a meet like this!
I'll keep you posted with all of the results.
August 3, 2008
Its been a busy few weeks for the Ontario Racewalkers.  I have updated the site with the results
from the Canadian Nationals in Windsor.
Good luck to Laurie who is competing in the Canadian Masters Champtionships in Regina, Sask.
Check out our
training page for a brief video of Lily and Dana training last week.
August 24, 2008
Now that the Olympics are over, we can all get back to normal!  Congrats to Tim Berrett on his
4:08 50K time in Beijing.

The Welland racewalk is quickly approaching.  The race entry kit is available, and can be found in
the
upcoming races section.  Unfortunately a few of us have been hindered by injuries and haven't
got in the training.  Kitty, John and Hans are all putting in the time and effort and should have good
races.

Laurie did well in Regina.  I'll get the results from the Canadian Masters Championships up soon.
September 27, 2008
We completed the Welland Racewalk on September 14 in very humid conditions.  I think all of
the times were slower than what people wanted and expected.  The humidity took a lot out of all
of the athletes.  Thank you to Roman for putting on a great race yet again, to both Roman & Judy
for their wonderful hospitality afterwards, and to the many volunteers and judges that were along
the race course.
The Ontario Racewalkers are taking a bit of a break at the moment.  We should be starting back
up in another week or two to start base-building for the indoor season.
December 29, 2008
Well, its been a while since I've updated this site, but since our break after the Welland Race,
we've been hard at work training and base-building for 2009.  First up is a 1,500m at York on
January 25, 2009.
Stay tuned to our Race Results section to see how we're coming along this year.
